Tough Time for Everyone at MGP (02 Sep 11)

The Manx Grand Prix was next on the calendar and the team headed to the Isle of Man with expectations; that quickly evaporated with bad news both on and off track during the two week festival. Davy would have three rides over the mountain circuit, the 350cc Classic CSC Honda, 500cc Classic CSC Honda and new to the team for 2011 a Post Classic 750cc CSC Suzuki.

Practice started well with two laps completed on the 350cc CSC Honda on Monday Night with the best at over 92mph, but after that indifferent weather and incidents on track meant reduced or cancelled sessions and machine problems restricted Davy to limited track time when his sessions did get going and by the Friday of practice week the 350cc Honda was the only bike qualified as there was a couple of breakdowns on the 500cc Honda and the 750cc Suzuki was still being completed. The 500cc CSC Honda did thankfully get a completed lap on Friday when Davy nursed it round at a very slow 85mph which would allow the team to start the race on Wednesday and he upped his time lap speed to over 93mph on the 350cc Honda when he got another lap completed. Davy had to wait until Saturday after the Newcomers Race to get a run on the 750cc Post Classic Suzuki and he actually managed to get two laps in with his fastest at 95mph, another lap was completed after the races and Davy upped his time to 98mph and was confident of getting over 100mph in Fridays Race. So at least all the bikes were qualified and it was now a case of trying to get them through their four lap races

Before the 350cc Classic Race on Monday the sad news had come through that Adrian McFarland had died after a crash in the Czech Republic and this cast a shadow over the team as he was well liked and the fact that he had come up through the ranks of racing in Ireland with Davy. Everyone involved with Davy Morgan Racing was devastated and sent Adrian’s family and friends their heartfelt and sincere condolences.

However racing would go on and Davy and the team prepared as normal for the 350cc Classic MGP on Monday morning and there was trouble from the start when the Honda would not start and it would be a start from the back of the grid, although Davy would be credited the time as the bike had not been brought to the start line. When he did get going it was short lived and he was a disappointing first lap retirement, not a good start to the week. The bad news continued later in the day when news of the death of young Wayne Hamilton in an accident in the afternoons Junior MGP stunned the paddock and another dark cloud over racing. So for the second time in two days everyone involved with Davy Morgan Racing had to send their heartfelt and sincere condolences to a racing family from home, this time Wayne’s family and friends.

Next up was the 500cc Classic MGP on Wednesday and after a, steady opening lap at 92.6mph Davy found himself in 16th place at the end of the first lap. Alas that was as good as it got as Davy was forced to retire on lap two. Another Day, another race and another DNF.

Friday afternoon and the teams last chance of a result, this time in the Classic Superbike Race on the CSC 750cc Suzuki Post Classic Machine. It was a steady start from the flag as Davy felt his way in to the race on the unfamiliar machine, which again looked to be short lived when he was black flagged in Ramsey on the opening lap. After a check over the bike was found to be okay and he proceeded, with a time credit awarded for the stop, he was in an impressive 5th place with a lap at 105.791mph as he headed on to lap two. A broken gear box put paid to any thoughts of a successful end to the fortnight and again he was forced to retire on lap two, to bring the curtain down on a tough, frustrating and sad MGP.

Speaking on his return home a subdued Davy commented, “Another disastrous trip to the island. I just wanted to get a finish, didn’t care were; I just wanted to repay the team and Steve (Caffyn) for all their time and effort and to lift everyone’s spirits after a tough couple of weeks. There is not a lot more I can say other than to offer my sympathies to the families of Adrian and Wayne and the two other guys that lost their lives at the Manx.”
