| It was the Ulster Grand
Prix at Dundrod and with a full complement
of machinery Davy was looking forward
to a change of luck around the worlds
fastest race track. Armed with the Strangford
Holiday Park / Leisure Services Suzuki,
CSC Branson R6 Yamaha, Davy Morgan #71RRSC
250cc Honda, 01RaceFX Superstock BMW and
a 500cc Classic Honda from Gerry O'Sullivan
it was going to be a busy few days.
Practice Wednesday:
Conditions deterioated as the day went
on, but at the start of the day Davy got
laps on the BMW leading the newcomers
before the rain came and by the time he
was next out it was raining heavily, but
he still managed to qualify 19th on the
Strangford Holiday Park / Leisure Services
Suzuki for Thursday's Dundrod 150 Superbike
Race. By the time he was next out on Gerry
O'Sullivans 500cc Drixton Honda the mist
had closed in and it was a controlled
session, before practice was abandoned
and the remaing four sessions cancelled.

Practice Thursday:
With all the UGP Sessions cancelled on
Wednesday things were going to be difficult
as the weather was very changeable not
just overall, but around the 7.4 mile
circuit. First up was the Superbike session
and Davy had to struggle with a faulty
steering damper on the Suzuki as well
as the difficult track conditions and
so his session was cut short and he had
to pull in before he could get a decent
lap time. On the 250 Honda his best time
was only good enough for ninth as he suffered
clutch problems in the drying conditions
and again had to pull in before the session
was completed.
With the track drying it was decided
to go with an intermediate front and dry
rear in the CSC Branson R6 for the Supersport
session, but on the second lap the rain
was on again around the back and Davy
again struggled to get a good lap and
was again well back on the start grid.
By the time the Superstock Session started,
three quarters of the track was wet and
with only one set off wheels Davy was
unable to go on the BMW and so had to
start from the back of the grid.
Race Thursday - Dundrod 150:
There were two races for Davy, the UGP
Classic and Dundrod 150 Superbike. In
the Classic Race Davy had a race long
dice with Allan Brew for third place in
the 500cc Class and eventually lost out
by a fraction of second and came home
fourth. As conditions worsened the Dundrod
150 Superbike Race was abandoned after
one lap so that was it.
Race Saturday - UGP:
Rain again greeted everyone on Saturday
morning, but it had stopped and begain
to dry as the Superstock Bikes were brought
to the grid. With only dry tyres it was
a case of having a look and see if there
was enough dry to race. Davy did start
in dodgy conditions, but as it dried he
got faster and faster on the 01RaceFX
BMW and he worked hard to bring it home
in 21st.
In the two Supersport Races he rode the
CSC Branson R6 hard in better if not perfect
conditions to come from the back row of
the grid on both occasions to finish 17th
and 16th getting quicker and quicker as
he went.
The 250cc Race saw him get a super start
and he was fifth at the end of the opening
lap and as the front two disappeared he
was in a terrific five way scrap for the
final step of the podium. As he headed
in to the hairpin on the final lap he
was third, but he was in too hot and the
wet tyre on the dry road lost grip and
he went down, he did remount to come home
a disappointing 13th.
Davy had to sit out one race with the
five race rule so decided to sit out the
opening superbike race as he had just
come off the 250. He did take to the line
for the second superbike race on the Strangford
Holiday Park / Leisure Services Suzuki,
but it was short lived as rain on some
parts of the circuit meant that the tyre
choice was wrong and left Davy with no
option other than to retire to finish
the day disappointingly.

Speaking later a disappointed
Davy stated, "Its another dissapointing
Ulster for me, i love this place, but
it just never seems to come together.
The last two years we had major mechanical
failures which spoiled the event and this
year the bikes were going well other than
a couple of niggly things, but the weather
played havoc. I have lost my wet weather
mojo and i just can't seem to get it back,
i went okay on wednesday in the soaking
wet, but in thursday's mixed conditions
i really struggled and ended up with lets
say not good qualifying positions.
The whole week was difficult with
the conditions, but at least i qualified
for all my races even if it was further
back than were i should be, i want to
thank the organisers for letting me start
on the Stocker (BMW) as i could not go
out in practice as we have only one set
of wheels and they have dry tyres on them.
I was pleased to give Gerry (O'Sullivan)
a finish on his Classic Honda on Thursday
and on Saturday we had four finishes from
five starts. One should have been a podium,
but i was just too hot in to the hairpin
and the front tucked on the 250 and i
went down heavy on my shoulder. The two
top twenty's from the back of the grid
on the CSC Branson R6 were satisfying
if not spectacular as the engine is made
up from the bits that did not break at
the TT. The real disappointment of the
week was not getting a good run on Trevor's
(Matthewson) Suzuki, i opted to miss the
first superbike race having just come
off the 250 to get myself settled and
then we made a tyre choice for the final
race, which proved wrong and unfortunately
i had to retire on the opening lap. Sorry
Trevor.
Thanks to everyone who helped me
throughout the week in trying conditions
and especially all my sponsors who support
me 100%, i am just sorry i could not deliver
better results on your bikes. The shoulder
is a bit sore now so its time to go home
and get a good hot shower." |
