| It was the first trip
south of the season next on the agenda
for Davy Morgan Racing as they headed
to the popular Skerries 100 meeting just
north of Dublin. It was to be a busy weekend
for the team with the repaired engine
arriving on thursday night for the CSC
Branson R6 Yamaha to be put in on Friday
morning before practice.
So it was back to a full compliment of
machinery for the popular Saintfield man
with the Strangford Holiday Park/Leisure
Services GSXR1000 Suzuki, CSC Branson
R6 Yamaha and the Davy Morgan #71 Road
Racing Supporters Club 250cc Honda. This
aligned with perfect weather conditions,
Davy proved to himself and the doubters
that he was still a force to be reckoned
with in Irish Road Racing. |

Practice on Friday went
well with the only fault that a lot of
dust on the circuit was making it slippery
in places, this did not deter Davy and
he set about his task with determination.
The organisers thankfully allowed him
to do a couple of laps with the newcomers
on the re-built 600 Yamaha to make sure
everything was okay, then it was down
to business.
He proceeded to put in an impressive
set of qualifying laps on all three machines
and was 6th fastest on the Strangford
Holiday Park/Leisure Services GSXR1000
Suzuki, on the front row and 3rd fastest
on the CSC Branson R6 Yamaha and topped
it off with pole position on the DM#71RRSC
250cc Honda. |
Race Day and again conditions
were pretty much perfect and Davy was
in determined mood to get his season back
on track at a meeting he very much enjoys.
First up was the Open Championship Race
and a solid start on the Strangford Holiday
Park/Leisure Services GSXR1000 Suzuki
meant Davy was fifth at the end of the
opening lap, on lap two he was back to
sixth and was having a great scrap with
Pearson and Archibald. But any hope of
getting further up the standings was brought
to an abrupt end when the race was red
flagged on the fifth lap and it was declared
a result so had to settle for a sixth
place start to the day.
The Junior 250cc Race was next and Davy
made a cracking start and led the pack
in to Finnegan's for the first time, by
the end of the lap he led by a second
and had stretched it to two seconds on
lap two. However there was a certain W.Dunlop
who was now second and closing and with
three laps to go had caught Davy, then
took the lead on the penultimate lap.
Davy hung on setting the fastest lap of
the race in the process, but he could
not get past and finished 0.4 seconds
back in second place.
(It was not finished however as the organisers
announced that Dunlop had been excluded
as he had no transponder and awarded Davy
the win only to later reverse that decision.)
It was then on to the CSC Branson R6
Yamaha for the Supersport Race and another
good start from the front row. |

As they headed off in to
the country he was third behind the two
Dunlop brothers and managed to hold on
to them for a lap and a half before they
broke away, but it was enough to pull
Davy three seconds clear of the chasing
pack of Shiels, Archibald and Sweeney.
He continued his relentless pace and although
hard work took a comfortable third place
finish, his best ever on the CSC Branson
R6 and after all the problems with it
at the TT all the more pleasing.
In the Grand Final on the Strangford
Holiday Park/Leisure Services GSXR1000
Suzuki Davy made a blinding start and
was in second place behind W.Dunlop out
of Finnegans and was third at the end
of the opening lap when M.Dunlop made
him sit up through Sam's Tunnel. He held
third for the next three laps despite
pressure from Open Race winner Derek Shiels.
Shiels did get past with three laps to
go, but Davy was giving up and returned
the favour to Shiels keeping him under
pressure until he got back in to the final
podium position on the run through Duke
Bends on the final lap to claim an impressive
third place as well as setting his fastest
ever lap at Skerries and take him in to
the Top Ten Fastest riders around the
popular circuit. |

Speaking later a tired
but elated Morgan commented, "Thats
more like it, but that was hard work out
there. All the bikes went well and i just
needed to prove to myself that i was still
capable and as i said to one of my team
after the Supersport Race, "I can
still ride a bike". I am so pleased
for Steve (Caffyn) and Trevor (Matthewson)
who like everyone else suffered badly
at the TT, but stuck with me and helped
in more ways than i can ever thank them,
but i hope days like this repays that
support."
"I made a poor start in the
Open race and the front four were gone,
but i was confident of getting fifth before
the end, but it was stopped short so that
was that. I made a good start in the 250
and got away, but you always know if William
(Dunlop) is on track that he is going
to be with you at some stage, although
today i did stay with him when he went
by, but i could not get back at him before
the flag. There was then some controversy
as the organisers announced William's
exclusion for a problem with his trnasponder
and declared me the winner. They then
re-instated him later and i was told i
would have to protest. I was not going
to do that, because as far as i was concerned
William had won fair and square although
the extra prize money would have been
nice after the TT i had. If William broke
the rules it is up to the organisers to
implement them not me."
"The Supersport result on the
CSC Branson Yamaha was a relief more then
anything after all than has happened over
the past few weeks and the fact that the
engine only went back in on Friday makes
it all the more satisfying. I was never
matching the two guys in front, but it
is great to give Steve a podium after
all his hard work to get the engine fixed
and here on time. The Supersport machines
are definitely the hardest work out there
as you are constantly working to keep
the corner speed up so that you are quick
enough on the straight bits."
"On the Strangford Holiday Park/Leisure
Services Suzuki i had what was probably
the most enjoyable ride of the day in
the Grand Final, i made my best start
of the day and was second then third and
was pushed all the way by Derek (Shiels)
who got me with three laps to go, but
i was not going to give up on the podium
and claimed a third podium on the final
lap to end what has been a terrific weekend
for me as i also set my fastest ever lap
qround Skerries. I want to thank everyone
who helped in anyway and especially Steve,
Trevor and those who give up their weekend
so that i can concentrate on racing motorbikes.
I would like to send my best wishes to
Norman (McKeag) who took ill on wednesday
and wish him a speedy recovery." |
