Gold Cup winds up Road Race Season (20 Sept 10)

It was the long trek across England to the Steve Henshaw Gold Cup meeting at Scarborough for the final Road Race of the season that was the pneultimate outing for Davy Morgan Racing in 2010. Its looked upon as very much a holiday meeting with a chance to mix racing and a bit of relaxation after the intensity of a long season.

The team left base at around 8:00am on Friday morning and arrived at the paddock at 7:15pm and preceeded to set-up. Saturday brought a cold morning, but at least a dry track as practice got underway. It did not start well as the chilly conditions meant that the CSC Branson R6 Yamaha could not be got up to temperature and with really short sessions there was no chance to pull in and get some more tape on the radiator so it would be a back row start in the heat. Things went a bit better on the Strangford Holiday Park Suzuki when he qualified tenth for his heat despite only completing two laps when a front brake problem forced Davy to call the session short. The 250cc / Minitwins Practice was last for Davy and after a major seizure at Killalane the previous weekend most of the session was spent running in the re-built mannmade Honda and a dissappointing 14th overall and the seventh quickest 250 machine was the result.

Racing started well with a pretty uneventful run to tenth place on the Strangford Holiday Park Suzuki in the first Heat of the Superbikes and qualification for the Final. The 250cc Race was next and a poor start saw Davy well down the field at the end of the opening lap, but he got his head down and managed to eventually pick off a number of riders and get himself up to fourth place at the flag. There was dissappointment next time on track when he was forced to retire on the third lap of the Superbike Final when tyre problems meant that the bike was all over the place. Dissappointment turned to frustration in what turned out to be Davy's final outing of the day in his Supersport Heat. On the CSC Branson R6 Yamaha Davy made a lighting start and from the back of the grid found himself mid pack going into Mere Hairpin, then a rider went down in front of him and Davy was jammed between the fallen bike and the bank. By the time the bike was moved the pack was well up the hill and Davy was dead last. Once again he got his head down and managed to get himself up to twelfth over the four lap sprint, but not enough to qualify for the final. Salt was rubbed into the wounds when the rider who came off and blocked Davy was one of the invited riders in the final.

Sunday was a non-event for Davy when wet and slippy conditions meant that the team did not have the correct tyres to go out and the correct decision was taken to sit out racing and so that was the Gold Cup and 2010 Road Race Season over and the team packed up and headed for Cairnryan and the boat home.

Speaking on the trip home Davy Commented, "That was a frustrating day the conditions were not not good and there was a lot of leavesand water on the track so i decided that it was not for me. Saturday went okay and i was having some fun. I love racing and i really enjoyed the run on the 250 and the CSC Branson R6 was brilliant and was having a good time on it before the incident which put paid to any hopes of making the final, i thought i might have got an invite to the final, but it went to a Yorkshireman. There were a few niggly problems with the Strangford Holiday Park Suzuki which made things difficult, but we got there before the tyre went off. So a mixed end to a long and successful season."

"Thats our road race season over, but we have a run out at Thruxton on the first weekend in October to show our appreciation to the sponsors from that part of the world who cannot get to any of the road races in Ireland or Isle of Man. I want to thank everyone who has helped me this year especially my sponsors without whom i could not make it on track. CSC Branson - Steve & Chris (Caffyn) and the team including Paul from Branson Honda & Yamaha, United Asphalt, Jet Plant, Inlay, Wenlock, SC Surfacing, Inglewood Hotel. My other main sponsors Trevor (Matthewson) of Strangford Holiday Park, Davy Morgan #71 Road Race Supporters Club and 01RaceFX Graphics. My personal sponsors LaMon House Hotel, Quoile Fuels Ltd, EJ Tractors, Arai Helmets, Rock Oil and NGK. Thankyou for all your support, without it Davy Morgan Racing would not exist, i hope i have gave you something to smile about in 2010 and hope we can continue our association in 2011 and maybe add a few others to help share the load."
