| It was a long trek south
next for Davy Morgan Racing and the Race
of the South, Walderstown. Not Davy's
favourite circuit as he has had a few
issue's there in the past, but with his
confidence high he was looking forward
to it and with a lot of re-surfacing the
track was in good order.
However the weather had other thoughts
on Saturday and it was announced that
practice was to be un-timed due to the
wet roads, but as the rain got heavier
and a lot of standing water began to appear
on track the organisers had no choice
and practice was abandoned at the start
of the third session. It meant that Davy
never got a wheel turned and we all just
sat or stood in the awning and watched
as the paddock got wetter and mudier along
with some of the children.
Sunday was going to be a busy day with
a full programme of practice to go through
before racing although all races immediately
had two laps cut from their original running
distance. Davy got out on all three machines
in practice and the CSC Branson R6, DM#71RRSC
250 Honda both went okay, but the Strangford
Holiday Park Suzuki had a misfire and
he pulled in after two laps and there
was a frantic awning as the team tried
to resolve the issue and it was back together
just as the Open Championship Riders were
called out on to the track for the opening
race of the day.
|
Everyones fingers were
crossed that the problem had been resolved
as Davy lined up on the front row on the
Strangford Holiday Park Suzuki for the
Irish Championship Open Race. It had as
Davy appeared round the final bend at
the end of opening lap in second place,
as they headed up the main road on to
lap two he powered past early leader John
Burrows and on lap two Davy led from Burrows,
Archibald, M.Dunlop and W.Dunlop. At the
end of lap three Davy was still at the
front and had a fifty yard lead over M.Dunlop
who now looked the only threat. Next time
around Davy still lead, but then a slight
mistake at one of the road ends allowed
Dunlop to close and the young man on form
got past Davy with three laps to go. Davy
managed to hang on and pulled clear of
Archibald, but could not get back at Dunlop
and finished in an excellent second place
- a good start to the day.
It was the 250cc Junior Championship
Race next up and another good start saw
Davy lead at the end of the opening lap,
but W.Dunlop was soon past as the Davy
Morgan #71 Road Racing Supporters Club
Honda could not match the speed of Dunlop's
Honda. Next time around it was the same
story with M.Dunlop as he also powered
past Davy in to second. It was then a
lonely ride for the remaining laps for
Davy as he could not match the two Dunlop's,
but was well clear of the next rider to
clinch his second podium of the day in
third.
The CSC Branson R6 Yamaha was next to
the line for the Supersport Race, but
there was not such a good start this time
from the front row and he found himself
seventh at the end of the opening lap.
On lap two he was up to sixth and chasing
down the two riders in front.

On lap three he was right
on Walsh and Archibald and in a real battle
for fourth, but then disaster a stone
thrown up from the riders in front holed
the radiator and that was the end of his
race.
There was then a long break of six races
before Davy would be out again on the
Strangford Holiday Park Suzuki for the
Grand Final. Again it was a front row
start, but this time as Davy powered of
the line the front wheel came up and he
had to roll off, loose drive as result
and found himself back in sixth at the
end of the opening lap, on lap two he
was up to fifth and chasing Burrows and
W.Dunlop who were just in front. For the
next six laps the three of them fought
it out for the final podium spot as M.Dunlop
and Archibald were clear at the front.
They all took turns at the front of the
group to entertain the spectators, but
with a lap to go Dunlop set a new lap
record to claim third leaving Davy in
an excellent, but from his point of view
disappointing fourth place finish. |

"It is the first
national road race that i have ridden
that the back roads are smoother than
the main road, it has been a long day
and if i am honest i am disappointed at
only finishing fiourth in the Grand Final",
said Morgan he continued, "I
really enjoyed the first race although
i thought we were not going to get to
the line at one stage after the problem
in practice. Fortunately it went brilliant
and if i had not run wide at the road
ends and let Michael (Dunlop)
close right up i wonder if i could have
held on to the flag - who's knows as he
riding really well at the minute. In the
250 Race third place was probably the
best i could have expected as the two
Dunlop's went past me along the main road
maybe 10-12mph faster, the wee bike went
well, but it is just not quick enough."
"There was more disappointment
on the CSC Branson R6, as we seem to be
having no luck on it at all with a lot
of niggly things happening to stop us
getting miles on it. Idid make a mess
of the start and gave myself a lot to
do, but i had dragged us back in to a
battle for fourth before the stones wrecked
the radiator and the screen so at least
it is going well enough and all we need
now is a bit of fortune to go our way.
In the Grand Final i got of the line well,
but then she began to wheelie and i had
to roll back and lost the drive, but i
worked hard to get back on terms and if
i am honest i am disappointed not to get
another podium, but it was a good scrap
with John (Burrows) and William
(Dunlop) and a year ago i would have
bitten your arm off for a fourth place.
so i suppose i have to be happy with my
weekend."
"We have a busy week ahead now
as we get home tonight around 10pm, then
its off again in the morning for the Southern
100, then home Friday morning, before
heading to Kells on Fiday night. I want
to thank everyone who is supporting and
helping me this year and i hope i am giving
them something to cheer about this season.
My sponsors have been brilliant and again
i want to thank CSC Branson and Strangford
Holiday Park for providing me with what
is proving to be competitive bikes, although
they will need a bit of work from 01RaceFX
who provide and sponsor all our graphics
as they took a real bashing at Walderstown.
I just hope that i can keep this run of
form going through to September." |
