| Next-up for Davy Morgan
Racing was one of his favourite races,
the popular Skerries 100 Road Race just
north of Dublin. With his recent good
run of form Davy and the team travelled
south in good spirits and hoping for some
more good results. There would be five
races over the weekend as in addition
to the Strangford Holiday Park GSXR1000cc
Suzuki, CSC Branson 600cc Yamaha and Davy
Morgan #71 Road Race Supporters Club 250cc
Honda he would be making his classic racing
debut on Irelands roads on the CSC Branson
500cc Drixton Honda.
Practice
It was a long day on Friday with alot
of practice to get through and delays
to allow for rain showers to dry up. Davys
first session was on the Davy Morgan #71
Road Racing Supporters Club 250cc Honda
and eventually ended up third and on the
front row of the grid behind Michael Dunlop
and Barry Davidson, a good start to the
day. Next up was the the 500/1000cc Classic
and Davy was unsure of what to expect
having never ridden the bike before in
Ireland. He managed to put the CSC Branson
Honda on the front row in third place
and the second 500cc machine.
There was then a long wait until the
Open Session and Davy got the Strangford
Holiday Park Suzuki out in the second
group and managed to post the third best
time in the group and the eighth best
time overall to make sure he got away
in the A Group come Race Day. His final
practice was also the last of the night
on the CSC Bramnson R6 Yamaha and with
two full sessions there was a lot of bikes
on track and Davy had to settle for the
eleventh best time overall and a front
row start from the B Group.
Speaking later in the evening Davy said,
"I suppose its okay, i am happy
with the 250 surprised with the Classic,
satisfied with the Open, but i would have
really liked to get away with the A Group
on the 600 as well, but there is a real
quality entry here this weekend. I will
just give it my best shot tomorrow." |
Race Day
The Day started for Davy Morgan Racing
with the Irish Championship Open Race
and Davy headed out on the Strangford
Holiday Park Suzuki hopeful of a good
result to keep him up near the top of
the Championship. He made an excellent
start, but braked too soon for Dublin
corner and the others in the group came
past again. He fell in to the back of
the group and set off after them, but
then on lap three at one of the road ends
the back wheel came up on a bump under
braking and Davy was forced up the slip
road. By the time he got turned the B
& C Groups were by so he decided to
retire.
In the 250cc Junior Race he made another
good start and found himself third in
to the first corner, but it was short
lived as the red flags came out before
the first lap was completed. From the
restart he had to take it easy as the
clutch on the DM#71RRSC Honda was starting
to go and this time he was fifth in to
the first corner. By the end of the opening
lap he was up to third and the next time
around he was second. Over the next few
laps he worked hard and pulled clear of
Barry Davidson on the road, but could
not catch Michael Dunlop and had to settle
for runner-up spot despite a charge from
William Dunlop in the closing stages.
It was Davy's Irish Classic debut on
the CSC Branson 500cc Honda next and he
made another good start and by lap was
in a clear second place and the first
500cc machine, but a carburettor came
loose and he was forced to retire at the
hairpin on the second lap.
The Supersport Race was next on the programme
and Davy made a solid start and found
himself third in his group early on, but
by half distance he was leading the group
and quickly pulled away to chase down
the riders in front. He managed to take
out some of the time and close to within
two seconds of them, but had to settle
for 8th Place at the flag.
The Grand Final was his last outing of
the day and he was up to sixth place on
lap two when the red flags came out and
the meeting was abandoned. |

Speaking at the end of
the day a subdued Davy commented, "Racing
once again takes a back seat today as
all our thoughts are with the family and
friends of Myles Byrne. I only really
knew Myles to say hello too, but one of
my team members knew him quite well and
said he was a really nice lad who knew
his limits and just loved racing motorbikes.
Everyone at Davy Morgan Racing would like
to extend their sympathies and condolonces
to his partner, children, family circle
and friends at this difficult time."
"On the racing front it was
a mixed weekend, qualifying went okay,
but race day was a bit of a mixed bag.
A couple of early mistakes in the Open
Race saw we well down the order so i decided
to retire and the mechanical fault on
the classic were the down side. The second
place on the 250cc Honda and eighth on
the CSC Branson 600 Yamaha in an ultra-competitive
class being the positives. I was up to
sixth in the Grand Final when it was stopped,
but that did not matter when the details
of the stoppage filtered through and the
organisers made the right decision to
halt proceedings." |
