2008 Scarborough Gold Cup: Enjoyable, but Disappointing Gold Cup Weekend

The annual end of season pilgrimage to Scarborough for the Gold Cup Meeting was to be Morgan Racing’s final outing of 2008 and with some good results behind him, Davy Morgan was looking a positive end to the season.

Alas it was not to be as machine failures spoiled a positive start to the weekend. In his qualifying heats, Davy qualified well with eighth and sixth places on the CSC Branson Honda Fireblade and R6 Yamaha respectively.

Unfortunately the teams problems started in the first Superbike Race when Davy only got a lap completed before his problems, then in the second Superbike Race it was another retirement after four laps. There was more frustration when the reliable R6 Yamaha let him down in the first Supersport Race, this was followed up with a fifteenth place finish in the second. That retirement was between a brace of sixth places on the Ballygowan RR Supporters Club Honda. This all meant that he was not able to take his place on the grid for the main Gold Cup event.

Speaking later Davy said, “As normal it was an enjoyable weekend, but machine failures made it a disappointing weekend on track. The 250 once again provided my best finishes, but the failure of the R6 was the biggest downer as it has been brilliant if not the quickest to ride all season. I want to thank everyone for their support through 2008, especially Steve Caffyn and the CSC Branson Team, Ballygowan Supporters Club and Kevin & Angela Wood at Investasure. Lets hope we can continue with the form I showed in the second half of this year in to 2009.”
