2008 Killalane: Pole & Podium on 250 at Killalane

Back to Southern Ireland for the season finale at Killalane and Davy was hopeful of carrying on the good form he has shown during the second half of the season.

Conditions were good for practice and first up were the Supersport Machines and Davy went out and put himself in eighth place on the grid. This was followed by the Open Session and it was disappointment this time as the Honda developed a misfire and Davy for safety reasons retired at the end of the first lap and so would start on Sunday at the back of the grid.

It was delight in the final practice session for Davy was the 250cc and Davy set a time at over 103mph on lap three that put him on pole position for Sunday’s race.

Race Day and all the races other than the Grand Final were reduced to five laps as bad weather was forecast later in the day. First up was the Open Championship Race and after burning the midnight oil the misfire seemed to be resolved on the Investasure Fireblade, but is was a back row start. It was just a case of some miles and when the flag dropped Davy worked hard and worked his way through to eighteenth over the five lap sprint. It was another good performance on the CSC Branson R6 Yamaha as he battled for fourth throughout with McFarland, Walsh, M.Dunlop and Kirwan, but had to settle for eighth at the finish.

The Grand Final was brought forward in the programme, but it made no difference for Morgan Racing as the Honda went sick again and it was retirement at the end of the opening lap. The 250cc Race was to end up with a podium finish, from the start Davy led the field away, but Michael & William Dunlop were right on his tail. William then made his move putting in a blistering lap that the other two could not match and gave him enough of a gap to take the win by just over a second with Davy second after holding off a last lap challenge from Michael.

In the final race of the day, the Supersport Non-Championship there was a mistake at the start that cost Davy time and places, but he recovered well to drag himself back to seventh at the chequered flag to bring an eventful day to an end.

Speaking later Davy said, “One of those mixed weekends, excellent on the 250, solid on the 600 and more problems with superbike. William got something extra out of his 250 on Sunday, I rode hard and held on but he was too good on the day. I had too good runs on the 600 and enjoyed my battles with Adrian (McFarland) and Damien (Mulleady). We decided to ride the Investasure Fireblade due to the handling issues with the CSC Branson Fireblade which were bad at Dundrod and would have been a nightmare here, but the misfire returned and that was that. So that’s the Irish season over and we will head to Scarborough now for the Gold Cup and the last race of 2008.”
