It was back to
the Isle of Man for the Southern 100 at
Billown next and after being the best
newcomer in 2007, Davy was looking for
a few more top ten finishes at the quick
and dangerous 4.2 mile circuit. It was
to be an eventful week with a couple of
excellent results achieved between the
heavy rain showers.
Monday practice was just a case of getting
dialled back in to the dangerous wall
lined circuit and Davy was more than happy
with his times. Then Tuesdays practice
was more of the same and Davy was pleased
with his third row starts on both CSC
Branson 600 and Investasure 1000 Honda
machines and a second row start on the
Ballygowan 250 Honda.
First Race on Tuesday was the Senior
Solo Founders and Davy made a complete
mess of the start and found himself languishing
back in sixteenth at the end of the opening
lap. He knuckled down and set about moving
up through the field setting his fastest
ever lap around Billown. On the final
lap he got past Paul Dobbs to claim a
creditable tenth place finish. He was
out for his second run of the evening
on the 250cc Honda and again made a mess
of the start and was eighth in to the
first corner, at the end of the opening
lap he was up to sixth and by the end
of the race he crossed the chequered flag
in fourth.
Wednesday was wiped out completely after
heavy rain left a lot of standing water
on the circuit so more valuable track
time was lost, but definitely the correct
decision.
Thursday and the weather was changeable,
with damp patches around the circuit after
the overnight rain Davy took the CSC Branson
R6 Yamaha to the grid. He was battling
for eighth early on in the race, but as
the conditions changed and the rain began
to fall he dropped off the pace and finished
tenth. By the time the 250cc Race took
to the circuit the rain was falling steady
and the road was definitely wet. Davy
took it steady in the difficult conditions
and brought the Ballygowan Honda home
in sixth, not as high as he would have
liked, but it was another safe top ten
finish.
The rain continued to fall and the roads
got wetter and wetter as the day progressed
and by the time the final race came around,
the Solo Championship, Davy decided it
was too dodgy to take out the Investasure
Honda out and so his 2008 Southern 100
was over.
Speaking later Davy said, “I
really enjoy this meeting and the organisers
are brilliant, there is no favourites
and all the riders are all treated as
equals. The circuit is definitely a riders
circuit, but you need to show it a lot
of respect as it is dangerous place with
little margin for error. It was another
good week’s results for me and could
have been better if I had got my starts
better and the rain had stayed away. It’s
a pity the rain came, but again George
(Peach) and his team did a terrific job
and made all the right calls. I will definitely
be back”.
