It was back to
Ireland and the Bush Road Races next for
the Davy Morgan Race Team. With thoughts
of last year’s disaster fresh in
the mind when he broke his shoulder after
a crash in the wet he had already made
the decision that if it was wet he would
not ride as there was not enough grip.
Fortunately for practice the circuit
was perfectly dry and Davy proved during
practice that he was a match for anyone
around the 3.3 mile circuit as he claimed
pole position on the Ballygowan RRSC 250cc
Honda, sixth on the Investasure Honda
Fireblade and fifth on the CSC Branson
R6 Yamaha. So it was a case of so far
so good and a prayer for dry roads on
Saturday.
Saturday morning and the roads were still
dry, but the skies were looking very threatening.
First race was the Open Championship and
on the Investasure Fireblade Davy only
got the sighting lap done as the rains
came on as they formed up on the grid
and he pulled in at the paddock. The roads
were drying with only some damp patches
before the start of the 250cc Race and
from the flag Davy took the lead and despite
the best efforts of Farquhar and Neill
he was still holding the lead at half
distance and was beginning to pull away.
Then things changed dramatically as a
heavy shower on part of the circuit shook
his confidence and he backed off letting
Farquhar through for the win, but managed
to hold on and get to the finish and claim
the runner-up spot.
That was to be Davy’s final race
of the day as the really heavy rain came
on as the Supersport machines were in
the holding area and it was so heavy that
there left a lot of standing water on
the circuit resulting in the organisers
having to abandon the remainder of the
meeting for safety reasons.
Speaking later Davy said, “I
just don’t like this place in the
wet after what happened last year, I have
no confidence in getting any grip. I think
if it had stayed dry I was confident that
I could have won the 250cc Race as I had
a gap over Ryan (Farquhar) before the
rain came and the wee bike was going really
well, but when the rain came on I just
backed right off and just tried to bring
it home. After that it was game over for
me as it was too wet in place to take
the Fireblade out in the Open Race and
then heavens opened and the meeting rightly
was abandoned”.
“The weather on Saturday spoiled
a potentially good weekend for the team;
I had qualified really well on both 600
and 100 machines and was confident of
picking up a couple of podiums. So it’s
back to the drawing board and hopefully
some good weather at our next race at
Skerries”.
