2007 Tandragee: Racing takes a Back Seat

Like everyone else involved in this great sport of Motorcycle Road Racing, the Davy Morgan Racing Team were stunned at the 2007 Tandragee after a freak incident at the start line chicane claimed the life of John Donnan. John was a real ambassador for the sport not only being a top runner himself over twenty years of racing, but also running his own immaculate race team and motorcycle business.

On the racing front Davy was glad to get to the wide open spaces of the Markethill Circuit for the Dalzell’s Tandragee 100. However he still found qualifying difficult with a lot of traffic on track, but things went better than at Cookstown and he eventually qualified 8th and 13th on the Investasure Financial Services Fireblade for the Open races, 12th on the Autotech Driver & Rider Training CBR600RR in the Supersport event and on Pole Position with the Ballygowan &District RRSC 250 Honda for the 2 Stroke Racing SC Junior Race.

Saturday and conditions apart from a slight breeze were perfect for racing and first up for Davy was the Tayto Junior Open Race on the Investasure Fireblade and after a poor start which saw him stuck in traffic well down the field, he managed to eventually move through to finish ninth with a fastest lap three seconds quicker than his time on Friday night. Next up was the ill-fated Trevor Warde Groupage Supersport Race and again slow off the line Davy had to work his way through the field and was up to ninth place when it was declared a result after the red flags came out for the John Donnan incident and subsequent abandonment of the meeting.

Speaking afterwards sitting on the steps of the Annadale Design/MacCleay Motor Engineers transporter as the CarNET van was loaded up for the NW200, Davy did not want to talk about the racing and paid his own tribute to the man affectionately know as “JD”, “I can’t believe it, John was a gentleman, he was riding really well this year and was one of the safest riders on track, he will be missed by everyone in the paddock and on track as he has helped us all out at some time or other. I would on behalf of myself and all the people involved with Davy Morgan Racing like to pass on our condolences and prayers to John’s family, friends and team at this awful time”.
