Road Races were next on the calendar and
with the aches and pains of his earlier
season off pretty much gone Davy was looking
to get back in to the top half of the
leaderboard. There would be no Ballygowan
Supporters Club 250 for the rest of the
year so he would be concentrating on the
Investasure Fireblade and Autotech Kawasaki.
The first session on the Fireblade went
well, and Davy qualified a lot higher
than he had been in recent meetings as
the shoulder was now almost back to full
strength. Practice was then brought to
an abrupt halt when there was a serious
incident involving Raymond Porter and
Darran Lindsay in the Supersport session
resulting in the death of Lindsay. After
a lot of meetings and discussions between
officials, riders and the family, practice
was abandoned, but it was agreed that
racing would go ahead on Sunday in his
honour.
The paddock was not itself on race day
after the events of practice and as the
riders took the grid they were determined
to put on a show in Darran’s memory.
Davy’s first ride was in the open
championship event and after a slow start
he eventually worked his way up to fourth
at the flag. Next it was the 600cc Supersport
Race and with the grid set from championship
positions, Davy was well back, but this
time he got away well and found himself
in a terrific race long duel with Derek
Brien who he eventually got the better
off to finish sixth on the Autotech Kawasaki.
Davy’s last outing of the weekend
was in the Grand Final and he got a brilliant
start on the Investasure Honda and was
right with the leading runners on the
opening laps. Finnegan and Donnan pulled
away as the race progressed and Davy found
himself in a terrific battle for the final
podium step with William Dunlop, but eventually
lost out by three tenths of a second and
came home fourth.
It was a sombre Davy speaking later who
said, “It was great to get to
the right end of the leaderboard again
after a disappointing couple of months,
but that does not matter this weekend
as we lost another friend and rival in
a freak accident in practice on Saturday.
I wish Raymond a speedy recovery and on
behalf of myself and everyone involved
with Davy Morgan Racing I want to extend
our condolences and deepest sympathy to
Darran’s wife Kerry, his family
and friends at this terrible time”.
