2006 Skerries: Off Spoils Day at Skerries

The busy month of July for Road Racers starts with the meeting described as the Irish GP, which is run by the Loughshinney Club at Skerries. A favourite meeting for Davy Morgan, although he would have liked a Superbike to go with his Ballygowan RRSC 250 Honda and Autotech 600 Kawasaki.

Friday practice was pretty uneventful with some excellent qualifying performances. In the Open Practice on his standard 600 Kawasaki Davy took third place in his group behind Cameron Donald and Raymond Porter and this was good enough for fourth place overall and a second row start. In the Street Sweep Two Stroke it was third quickest and a front row start even the wee bike did not seem as crisp as usual. In the 600 Supersport practice it was fourth again to complete a satisfying nights work.

Saturday morning, the weather was fine and Davy was looking for some morale boosting results ahead of the busy July and August months. The first race of the day was the Open Class and it began well on John McKeown’s Kawasaki, when after a race long duel with Roger Maher on his R1, Davy came home a very creditable fifth place behind Donald, Finnegan, Porter and Archibald and a fastest lap at 103.335mph. Next up was the 600 Race and it was another race long duel this time with Darran Lindsay who had more punch out of the corners, which was enough to see off Davy to the line and leave the Saintfield man with another fifth place finish and a further second of his lap times.

The Two Stroke Supporters Club was to turn out an eventful seven laps for Davy. A few adjustments had been made overnight to 250 Honda, which would hopefully put him right on the pace. It looked good at the start as off the line, Davy was only headed by Lindsay and W.Dunlop. The bike was still not right and by the end of the lap the two leaders were gone and Davy found himself in a scrap with Barry Davidson and Andrew Courtney. On lap four Davy was in fourth and getting ready to make his move on Davidson when Courtney made a badly misjudged manoeuvre and hit Davy on the side and they both went down, which to say Davy was not happy about is an understatement.

A bit detuned, sore and the track starting to deteriorate with the heat, Davy took to the circuit for the Des D’arcy Grand Final and an eighth place finish just behind John Burrows brought the day to an end on a reasonably positive note.

A frustrated and angry Morgan said afterwards, “I just can’t believe it, the day had been going really well until the 250 Race. The bike was just not right and I ended up in a dice for third with Barry (Davidson) and Andrew (Courtney) I had got back in to fourth and was confident I could get third when he tried to pass me back and just t-boned me, I was so angry. There’s about a thousand pounds of damage to the bike and I am now beginning to feel a bit sore as well. I was well pleased with my runs on John’s (McKeown) 600 with a couple of very pleasing results early in the day.”
