2006 Isle of Man TT: Superbike the only Positive

It was the ultimate challenge of man and machine next for Davy Morgan as he headed to the Isle of Man for the world famous TT Races. Davy did not really know what to expect so it was a case of just keeping the head down and get on with and work hard at the business in hand.

Bill Simpson and the team had worked hard with the resources available to get the bikes as workable as possible for practice. It was steady start with laps on all three machines in the early sessions just to get back into the flow of the circuit and the feel of the machines. On Tuesday evening Davy set his fastest lap of the week on the Superstock machine at 118.095mph, which was only good enough for the 19th fastest time.

Work was still progressing with the other two DMRR machines with huge differing levels of success. In Thursdays afternoon session Davy got his fastest times on both of these machines with a lap at 121.677mph in 18:36.30 and a very satisfying twelfth quickest time overall of the week on the Fireblade, which Davy was really enjoying riding. The Supersport was a completely different story with a lowly and very disappointing 32nd quickest time at 114.921mph, as it just was not coming together on the CBR600RR.

The weather was still excellent as Davy took the Fireblade to the line for the opening Jester Interactive TT Superbike Race. An opening lap from a standing start at 121.638mph saw Davy in twelfth place and with another lap over 121mph second time around despite a big mistake at the Creg he moved himself up to eleventh at the first pit stop. A lap at 116.302mph including the pit stop and a plus 122mph fourth lap kept Davy in a solid eleventh and brought him within touching distance of the top ten. By the end of lap five, including the second pit stop Davy had moved himself in to tenth place. However he kept his best to last and a final lap of 18:17.28 at 123.786mph saw him overhaul Raymond Porter and claim an impressive ninth place finish at an average speed over 120mph.

The Scottish Life International TT Superstock Race was a disaster, Davy felt that he had rode as hard as he ever had around the 37 ¾ mile circuit, but the reward did not match the effort and a quickest lap of 119.641mph summed it up and proved no were near good enough and a twentieth place finish was the result.

If the Superstock was a disaster the IOM Steam Packet Supersport Junior TT was a catastrophe, in twenty second place at the end of lap one at 116.133mph and a retirement on lap two with clutch failure saw Davy not finish a Supersport Race for the first time on the mountain circuit. To say Davy was not a happy was a massive understatement.

Davy could not dwell on the disappointment as he takes his racing seriously and had to lift himself both physically and mentally for Friday’s 2e2 Senior TT. His opening lap was at 122.580mph and gave him twelfth place in the race standings, he pushed his speed on the second lap up to just over 123mph and move up to tenth in the race order.

Lap three at 119.193mph including his pit stop moved him further up the leader board to eighth, then another lap at over 123mph moved up him in to seventh and he was now the top Irish runner. A final two laps at 118.415 and 123.618mph saw him come home in seventh his best ever finish at the TT and a race average of over 121mph. An excellent finish to a long three weeks.

An emotional Morgan commented afterwards, “I don’t want to say too much as it has been a very difficult and stressful three weeks, I would like to thank my friends and sponsors for all their support and encouragement throughout, but its over now and we move on. I got my fastest ever lap around the mountain circuit, which I feel could have been a lot been a lot quicker in the right environment and I backed this up with my best ever TT result as the first Irishman home in seventh place in the Blue Riband Senior TT and after my ninth in the opening Superbike Race it proves that I can ride and compete on a Superbike. The DMRR Fireblade was excellent throughout.”
