| Davy Morgan travelled
to Scarborough for the end of season Gold
Cup meeting and his final outing of the
2005 Road Race Season. The priority was
his quest to clinch the very prestigious
250cc Street Sweep 2 Stroke Supporters
Club Championship (won previously by Darran
Lindsay and Ryan Farquhar), but it was
important to give all his sponsors a final
good showing so that they could look forward
with confidence to the 2006 season. Despite
still suffering from a very painful back
injury the Saintfield Lorry Driver was
determined after all his hard work not
to let himself, sponsors and fans down
at the last hurdle.
The weekend got off to a bad start in
the opening Superbike Heat when an excellent
start was brought to an abrupt end. Davy
was right in behind Adrian Archibald when
they both ran wide and too much gas was
applied and Davy parted company with the
Touchwood Consulting ZX10.

He was pitched through
a fence and got hit by the bike, which
didn’t help his back and unfortunately
finished the season for the Superbike.
In a lot of pain and well down on power,
disappointing lower leader board positions
on the Investasure/John Bell Regal Spec
R6 Yamaha was the best that could be achieved.
On the Ballygowan Supporters Club 250cc
Honda it was a case of grit the teeth
and ride through the pain, with the result
being sixth and eighth place finishes,
which was enough to clinch the championship.
Although Davy was not a happy man at having
finished so far off the pace, although
to finish at all was a major achievement
with the pain.
It should have been party time to finish
an indifferent weekend, but by this time
the terrible news from Ballybunnion was
filtering through about the death of Richard
Britton and the whole paddock was stunned
including Davy and his team. The championship
became of little interest as the teams
thoughts were for Richards family and
friends.
Speaking afterwards Davy commented, “I
should have been celebrating to tonight,
however it is the furthest thing from
my mind, I just can’t believe it,
my thoughts and prayers are with Richards
family. We won the championship today,
but at this moment in time it does not
seem important as we have lost an amazing
man and very talented road racer. Richard
was a gentleman, he had that infectious
smile no matter what the circumstances
and would have helped you if he could
before a race, but once on the circuit
he was as determined as the next man and
boy he could race a bike. We had three
terrific races this year on the 250 machines
at Skerries, Mid Antrim and Killalane;
with the one at Skerries up they’re
as one of the best races I have ever had
the privilege to ride in. Rest in Peace
my Friend”
