Davy was looking forward to his return to Dundrod after a four-year
absence due to his Manx Grand Prix commitments
and injury. The fast flowing circuit suits
his riding style and he was hopeful of
some good results on all three machines,
Ballygowan & District Road Racing
Supporters Club 250cc Honda, Investasure
Financial Services R6 Yamaha and the Touchwood
Consulting ZX10 Kawasaki.
Practice did not go well in the perfect
conditions on Wednesday with little niggling
machine problems and Davy struggling to
pick up the circuit again after being
away, especially with all the safety improvements
causing all sorts of problems and very
disappointing qualifying positions.
On Thursday morning the weather had changed
for the worse and two laps practice on
the Superbike was all the time on circuit
as it was impossible to learn anything
more in the awful conditions. The AJN
Plumbing Contracts Dundrod 150 Superbike
Race was on Thursday afternoon and things
did not get much better resulting in a
retirement on the opening lap, when slick
tyres were the wrong option.
Race Day and Davy, was looking for a
change of luck, which did not come. In
his first race, the Run for Yer Maun Supersport
Race a stone hit the helmet on lap one
and knocked one side of the visor out,
Davy tried to fix it, but the whole thing
came out on his hand and had no choice,
but to retire. The Street Sweep 250cc
Race gave Davy his only finish of the
week in a disappointing eighth place after
riding the wheels of the little Honda
on the brakes and round the corners. Davy
commented, “I passed Darren (Burns)
and Richardson on the bends down in to
Leathemstown, but half way up the hill
they just went past me again, the wee
bike is just not quick enough”.
In Road Racing Ireland UGP Superbike
Race Davy was running in the top fifteen
and had just done his first lap over 120mph
and was confident of going faster on the
Touchwood Consulting ZX10 when the rain
started and the race was stopped. For
the restart the wrong tyres were chosen
for conditions around the circuit and
after things looking pretty good in the
early part of the race, a frustrating
DNF was the result and a realization that
it was just going to be one of those awful
race meetings you get from time to time.
Shrugging his shoulders and totally depressed
on Saturday evening Davy said, “One
to forget.”
