2005 Isle of Man TT: Mixed Fortunes for Morgan at TT Festival

Saintfields Davy Morgan traveled across the Irish Sea for his first full TT after his Senior Manx Grand Prix win last year made him ineligible for the August meeting. There were high hopes of some good results, but a little apprehension as the big bike handling was still not quite right.

Practice was relatively untroubled, although losing sessions did not help as he worked hard to get the Kawasaki on the pace. A fastest lap on the Touchwood Consulting Kawasaki of 117.882mph was just not were Davy wanted to be at the end of practice week. On the Investasure R6 the quickest lap of the week was 111.197mph, not the quickest, but it was handling well and he knew how much faster it could go.

Racing saw Davy take in all five solo races and came away with two silver and two bronze replica’s, the first Supersport Machine in the Senior and a DNF. In the opening TT Superbike two laps were completed before retiring with handling problems and a fastest lap of 119.399mph. In the Superstock Race it was a fourteenth place finish, but an exclusion followed for an illegal brake lever, which should have really been pointed out at scrutineering, we thought it was okay as quite a few other machines had the same one fitted.

The Supersport Races brought two twelfth place finishes and a fastest lap in 19:00.59, at 119.086mph on the final lap of the B Race, which were very respectable on a two-year old machine. With the ZX10 problems it was the R6 for the Senior TT as it was felt that six laps could be done on the 600, but not on the big bike. It was the right choice as a sixteenth place finish and the first 600 home earned a bronze replica and extra cash.

At the end of a long two weeks Davy commented, “It’s a long time on the Island, which I hate, when you are not racing there is nothing to do. It was hectic and I will not be back unless I can get some sort of team structure behind me, its no good with the set up that I had this year. Things have improved with regard to the meeting, but there is still more that needs done. The exclusion from the Superstock was one of the biggest downers and the whole way it was handled is not acceptable, of course losing the money was also a blow as we have a tight budget to work with.”

“On the racing front I was pleased with the performances on the Investasure R6 Yamaha especially being the first 600cc machine home in Fridays Senior Race. The Touchwood Consulting ZX10 Kawasaki is a whole different ballgame. I know I should be able to lap at 124/125mph on the bike, but I did not even get a lap at over 120mph due to the handling problems, which is a real frustration. I am confident we will get there as we are getting closer with every outing.”
